it’s official – we’re genuine, bona fide dickson residents

July 24, 2008

Today, Miss Helen from the Dickson Greeters visited our home.  I didn’t get the chance to meet her but Rhonda (my wife) was pleased to make her acquaintance.  Rhonda got the low-down on the town and a truck load of coupons, brochures, and sweet treats from local merchants.  It’s nice to be noticed.  We were in the house roughly four days before the Greeters were on the scene.  I’m impressed with the speed of their effort to embrace new residents.  I recognize that on some level this is a business and that advertising is involved.  Yet – it’s comforting to get a little attention.  How do you communicate value to others?  How do you reach out to newcomers?  At Cross Point, we encounter lots of new faces.  How well are we embracing our guests?  Perhaps they don’t need coupons and brochures – but how can we most effectively share our gratitude for their visit and a genuine appreciation for who they are?  I’m just curious.  Any ideas?

That is hilarious! Mrs. Helen visited us when we moved in almost 5 years ago!

As for CP people, listening is tops. Just being available to hear them whether it is because they love CP or whether they need help. So often we just half listen to people and miss the chances to serve them…and make them feel like a priority!

OK… Miss Helen visited me when we moved here 10 years ago. Cannot believe she is still at it! Wow~ Sweet lady. Great service.

As far as CP goes … I agree with Jenn. CP members, regular attendees, staff, etc. need to make sure that we make an effort to have time for visitors/new-comers. The kiss of death is when someone feels that the church is a “closed circle”.

But … in addition to the first impression (and maybe second and maybe third) that is made at the place of worship … I believe it is VERY important to have personal follow-up with people. Not some standard canned form letter but … REAL and PERSONAL follow-up. People should feel like they matter. What did Pete say recently, “EVERYONE IS WELCOME !!!” Let’s make sure they walk away KNOWING that is TRUE.
